I came across a site today called http://www.bbscorner.com/ it deals with accessing bulletin board systems or bbs's. Now im sure alot of people reading this are saying bbs's are dead. This is simply not the case, dial-up or old school bbs's are dead but many of them including some newer ones in the past few years have migrated to telnet, many of them using software called synchronet including one I like called The Diamond Mine located at http://bbs.dmine.net:81/. I used to run my own dial-up bbs back in the day and now that I found synchronet i would love to bring it back probably under a new name since I probably cant get away with using America Offline.

I would like to talk about social networking, I think it's taking over the world. Let's start with the biggest ones. First we had MySpace, then we had things like Facebook, and Twitter, and now Google Buzz. There are also a bunch of minor social networks such as MyYearbook.com, Fubar.com (formally CherryTap.com), Tagged.com, Ect. Then of course let's not forget Ning.com where people can create their own social networks. And after listening to TWiT (This Week In Tech) for June 27, 2010 I have heard a rumor of what has been termed a "Facebook Killer" from Google called GoogleMe. So as I said in the beginning of this post social networking is taking over the world.

I was thinking earlier today about abandoned pets. My thought is that some of the abandoned/stray pets out there is because people from time to time usually because of moving, need to get rid of pets but cant afford to just take them to the humane society to keep them off the streets. What I think would help this is something like what if heard about on tv (usually law & order: svu) where if you have a pet you can take it to a specific location and drop it off for free and with no fear of creating yet another abandon pet.

I recently read an article about How To Speed Up A Start Up. I have decided to post my own opinion on this, but instead of How To Speed Up A Start Up, my idea will be How To Speed Up A PC Without Spending Loads Of Money.

Step One: Open the Start Menu, click Run, type MSCONFIG, press Enter.

The System Configuration Utility will appear, click the Startup tab. This displays everything that loads in the background when you start your computer. If it's a very long list, it's probably slowing you down.

Look through the list and see if you recognize anything you don't or rarely use. Be careful -- you don't want to remove everything! We recommend leaving any drivers for your graphics/video controller and other peripherals, as well as any antivirus or firewall software. But if you look closely you can probably spot unnecessary extras that could be eliminated.

Step Two: Download End It All and shut down any unnecessary applications.

Step Three: Download CCleaner and clean out unnecessary junk files & registry entries.

Step Four: Uninstall unused programs/applications from your system.

Step Five: Download Defraggler and defrag your hard drive.

Step Six: Run an anti-spyware/malware program. Ad-Aware has always worked for me.

Step Seven: Run an anti-virus program. AVG Free is my recommendation.

All The Programs I Have Listed Are Free And Will Help Speed Up A PC.

Geordi presses a key, and a logo appears on the computer screen.

Riker looks puzzled. "What the hell is 'Microsoft'?"

Data turns to answer. "Allow me to explain. We will send this program, for some reason called 'Windows', through the Borg command pathways. Once inside their root command unit, it will begin consuming system resources at an unstoppable rate."

Picard "But the Borg have the ability to adapt. Won't they alter their processing systems to increase their storage capacity?"

Data "Yes, Captain. But when 'Windows' detects this, it creates a new version of itself known as an 'upgrade'. The use
of resources increases exponentially with each iteration. The Borg will not be able to adapt quickly enough. Eventually all of their processing ability will be taken over and none will be available for their normal operational functions."

Picard "Excellent work. This is even better than that 'unsolvable geometric shape' idea."

Data "Captain, We have successfully installed the 'Windows' in the command unit and as expected it immediately consumed 85% of all resources. We however have not received any confirmation of the expected 'upgrade'."

Geordi "Our scanners have picked up an increase in Borg storage and CPU capacity to compensate, but we still have no indication of an 'upgrade' to compensate for their increase."

Picard "Data, scan the history banks again and determine if their is something we have missed."

Data "Sir, I believe their is a reason for the failure in the 'upgrade'. Apparently, the Borg have circumvented that part of the plan by not sending in their registration cards.

Riker "Captain we have no choice. Requesting permission to begin emergency escape sequence 3F . . ."

Geordi, excited "Wait, Captain I just detected their CPU capacity has suddenly dropped to 0% !"

Picard "Data, what do your scanners show?"

Data "Apparently the Borg have found the internal 'Windows' module named 'Solitaire' and it has used up all the CPU capacity."

Picard "Lets wait and see how long this 'solitaire' can reduce their functionality."

.... Two Hours Pass ....

Riker "Geordi what's the status on the Borg?"

Geordi "As expected, the Borg are attempting to re-engineer to compensate for increased CPU and storage demands, but each time they successfully increase resources I have set up, our closest deep space monitor beacon to transmit more 'Windows' modules from something called the 'Microsoft fun-pack'.

Picard "How much time will that buy us ?"

In my first blog post of 2010 I mentioned that the Pittsburgh Pirates looked to be on the right track for once. Now that opinion hasnt changed, but id like to update the original post. At the time of the original post I had mentioned that the Pirates had let Matt Capps go Free Agent and get picked up by the Washington Nationals, and had acquired Akinori Iwamura in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays, signed Ryan Church & Javier Lopez, and were on the verge of a deal with Octavio Dotel. AS of now Octavio Dotel has been signed and is the new Closer, and another signing includes Bobby Crosby.

These days everyone knows what a PDF is, but unless you have a PDF reader you cannot read them. I am sure that alot of people think that their only choice in a reader is Adobe Acrobat Reader. Now I dont know about anyone else, but I hate the Adobe reader, it takes forever to load just so you can read a file. That is why I am writing this blog post, to show that there is a better alternative to Adobe. Go to http://www.faxitsofware.com and download the Foxit Reader. I personally find that Foxit Reader is a lot quicker then Adobe and does the same job.

I recently (within the the last year) built a desktop system running Ubuntu 9.04. For those who don't know Ubuntu is a free distribution of Linux. I have not had half the issues i previously had with Windows. Personally my last windows machine was Windows Vista which as anyone know is one of the buggiest Windows versions around with the exception of Windows Millennium Edition. For those who say there's no apps for Linux I direct you to http://www.getdeb.net for some decent easy to install apps for Ubuntu. For the gamers out there (like myself) I will admit you wont be able to play a lot of the big name games out there like WoW, EverQuest, Halo, ect, but if you go to http://www.playdeb.net you can find some decent and free games. So for anyone out there that wants to build a decent computer (not a gaming pc) then go to http://www.ubuntu.com get you self a copy of a free operating system that in my opinion is a lot more stable & cheaper then Windows, and a lot cheaper then Mac and build away, just make sure your minimum cpu is 700mhz and your minimum memory is 256mb,

I know i havent posted anything for awhile, but thats something id like to change. This blog post is about the fact that my Pittsburgh Pirates seem to be on the right track for when Spring Training starts. Signing players like Akinori Iwamura, Ryan Church, Javier Lopez, and at the time of this post nearing a deal with Octavio Dotel who we can really use after losing Matt Capps to Free Agency. Now provided the guys that are still with the team and the new guys that have been signed play as well as people know they can, and provide the Pirates dont screw it up with bullshit trades like they seem to do every damn year, they MAY have a season that will end the 17-year loosing streak.

*In second grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you stand up to the class bully.

*In third grade your idea of a good friend was the person who shared their lunch with you when you forgot yours on the bus.

*In fourth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who was willing to switch square dancing partners in gym so you wouldn't have to be stuck do-si-do-ing with Nasty Nick or Smelly Susan.

Legend of the Red Dragon

Anyone remember the old bbs door game Legend of the Red Dragon or L.O.R.D. for short. Well I found a web-based version called Legend of the Green Dragon, I have plade it myself and like everything else probably cant compare to the original, this game atleast gives people a chance to play something they havent played since the golden age of bbs's. I should know because not only was I a lord player i was also a bbs sysop, so i was running my own copy of lord and i remember how popular it was.
